The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
